Soon one of the largest problems in the moment of defining acting measures it is ” as to measure that that should be measured “. The central subject to be answered in this article refers to define some approaches for the determination of indicators or acting measures that allow appoint the efforts of the organization for the improvement of the processes, at the same time that if edificated consistent competitive positions.

This paper presents the utilization of the resources versas product matrix, part of the ZERI (Zero Emissions Research Initiative) methodology, aiming the evaluation of environmental impacts resulting of manufacturing activities of a wood furniture manufacturer. The paper does not end the ZERI concept discussion, but does show, through a real case, the potential profitability obtained when a company considers environmental related aspects. The ZERI concept do support the internal search for efficiency, at the company, during a business process improvement program. This is achieved through the increase of awareness for the material resources.

The great importance of the Information Systems in the World of Business is notorious for the necessity to be flexible and quickly to take decisions. Now, the publication and use of ISO 14000 standards to the environmental management business, will have a direct impact in the market capacity for the necessity to work process, products and services environmentally correct. The aim of this article is to show how the information systems can help in the managerial innovation process, continuous improvement programs and ISO 14000 standard certification as well as the organizational change and to determine a competitive strategy.

The modifications of the standards of modern man’s life makes that the housing leaves of being only a shelter for becoming an instrument of interaction between man and environment. Under this aspects we must analyse every consequence of the choice of bad housing; it is necessary to measure every dimension of it, considering costs, losses and expenses. It is in this new context, utilizing the most noble quality of man – the creativity – that the designer must play his role, trying to overcome his newest challenge: to plan the integration between the environment and the user. The observation of every dimension of the housing and its fitness with the user’s needs, can face in problems unimaginable from the usual optics.

A new approach used by firms to promote changes in the direction of total quality is the methodology called Business Process Improvement – estructured methodologies to define, analyse, and improve the process according to the clients needs. This methodology has been the main approach used by GAV/UFSC (Value Analysis Engineering group) during its consulting works to many manufacturing and services firms. Despite the good results achieved so far, the experience using this methodology has pointed out some aspects that cannot be forgotten during its implemantation. If they are not taken into account on time they prevent the methodology to suceed in its
implementation. Its worth noting that the first researchers to use this methodology, like Harrintong [1], Falconi [2], and Almeida [3], they don’t emphasize these aspects in their papers. Only with the application of the methodology and with its critical analisys is that these aspects can be observed. This paper presents an outline of the Business Process Improvement methodology emphasizing some insights of it that could help others researchers and consultants to better understand and apply methodology.
